Making a National Legal Practice Visible Across Google and AI
A national practice needed a website that matched its reach
A personal injury practice could accept matters across the country, but its search presence did not reflect that coverage. The site had limited state and city content, weakening the connection between the firm’s services and the location-specific questions prospective clients asked.
The opportunity was to build a useful search presence across those markets while improving how the practice appeared in generated answers. That required a connected program rather than treating conventional rankings and AI mentions as unrelated objectives.
This case follows that connection from the website’s source pages to the search and AI systems that surfaced them. It focuses on what changed, how the measures differ, and where attribution needs care.
The work connected source content, authority, and accessibility
The program combined practice-area improvements, new state and city pages, and a 12-month authority campaign. The firm’s own writers supplied location drafts, while optimization and implementation turned that material into structured, accessible pages. The recorded link campaign delivered 263 links between October 2025 and September 2026.
AI-focused work was added during spring 2026, covering technical access, content structure, site health, and off-site reviews and citations. Monitoring began in June across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity.
The important strategic choice was to give the business specific pages that could answer specific needs. An assistant cannot cite a convincing explanation of a service in a market if the business has never clearly published that explanation. The same content also gives an ordinary searcher a more useful destination.
Authority work supported that page development. The engagement therefore created several overlapping changes, which is why the results are assessed as a coordinated program rather than assigned to a single optimization.
Organic growth appeared in several different measurements
Ahrefs estimated roughly 1,800 monthly organic visits for the 30 days ending October 9, 2026, compared with about 220 over the same dates a year earlier. That is approximately eight times the earlier estimate. Domain Rating rose from 18 to 43 during the campaign.
The location pages moved from about 30 estimated monthly visits in November 2025 to around 360 in the later reporting. On October 9, 17 of 22 tracked state and city searches appeared on page one, with 15 of those positions served by the newer pages. All 22 tracked searches were in the top 20.
Search Console recorded a best week of 400 Google clicks in late September. Its clicks and impressions are first-party search measurements, while Ahrefs traffic is a model. They describe complementary evidence and should not be combined into one traffic total.
The useful business story is wider relevant coverage. More markets had an appropriate page and a recorded search presence, rather than the entire site depending on a small number of established URLs.
AI progress was measured against a defined competitive set
Across eight monitored nonbranded questions, the share of answers mentioning the firm increased from 3% in June to 11% in the later 30-day window. Its position moved from 13th to 1st among the same 15 tracked firms. This is an eight-percentage-point gain within that sample, not a claim to lead every legal search.
Platform-specific results differed. Google AI Overview mentions rose from 4% to 21%, while ChatGPT mentions increased from 9% to 28%. The comparison uses June 9 to 30 against September 10 to October 9, 2026.
The website was retrieved as a source in 4.8% of monitored answers, up from 1.4%. Six of its seven most-retrieved pages were state or city pages. That gives this case a practical point of interest: the pages created to explain geographic relevance also became useful sources in AI answers.
Mentions, source retrieval, and recommendations remain different observations. A business can be cited without being recommended, so the measures retain their own definitions.
AI discovery also produced trackable contacts
WhatConverts recorded 14 contacts referred by ChatGPT between January and September 2026: 12 forms and two calls. They are recorded referral contacts, not confirmed retained cases or revenue.
That lead window begins before the dedicated AI work was introduced. It therefore documents an emerging referral channel without proving that all 14 contacts were caused by the later optimization. The engagement was not a controlled experiment.
For a specialist practice, the next useful question is what happens after contact. Qualification, matter suitability, response, and retention belong in intake reporting. Those stages cannot be inferred from a referral count alone.
What another business can take from this example
The strongest lesson is the relationship between a clear offering and useful source material. Service expertise needs to be expressed in pages that match the situations in which customers look for help.
A coordinated strategy can then improve content, authority, and accessibility while measuring different channels on their own terms. That is more informative than declaring success from one AI response or one high-ranking keyword.
The project shows how a business can extend its search footprint while keeping the evidence specific. It provides a model for diagnosis and measurement, not a promise that another firm will reproduce the same rates.
